I believe good insurance starts with having an agent that can offer multiple options, who has multiple companies to work with and who does not work for "any" of the insurance companies he or she represents. A good insurance agent understands how to interview a family and to how to identify what coverage’s a family actually needs. It is only then an agent should shop for price. Good Insurance is value driven not merely price driven.
When I first began my career in this field, I was approached by agents from two large insurance companies. Each offered me a position and salary in exchange for my loyalty to their “Captive Agency." The problem I found was that if I gave my loyalty to a single company, I would not be able to offer good insurance to everyone. I would not be able to look out for the best interests of my family, friends and future clients. I would only be able to offer people the best policy and price that that the one company I worked for had to offer. I wanted to offer good insurance to everyone and believed that to be a good insurance agent I would have to refuse both offers and become an "independent agent"
As an “Independent Agent” I represent over 50 companies. I do not work for any of them. My loyalty as a broker/agent is to my clients. I customize and create a good insurance plan for each of my clients. I am often able to double or triple a family’s coverage and still save them money. It’s not uncommon for me to save a family hundreds or even thousands per year. Because I am not captive to a single agency, I am free to look at all the options available. These options allow me to find the best value for my clients.
